Drawing like a bunch. Working on a couple commission pieces.
ALSO! I'm working on a new stop motion video as a collaboration with a classical guitar quartet. Performance will be in April, at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University.

Commuter bicycling in New York City has increased by 26% in the last year, building on last year’s unprecedented growth and representing a more than doubling in bike commuting in just the last seven years. The increase comes alongside the expansion of the City’s bike network, with the number of bike lanes nearly doubled the last three years.

explore+consume.
Free will and individual character are major tenets to the american identity. They are also outdated.
In an age of explorers the power of the individual was real. Blank areas existed on the map and wilderness was a force shaping humans identity. With the death of wilderness and the birth of the nature channel, the curiosity that drove exploration has removed natures unknown. The great planes are now farms and gas stations. The rockies are skiing and american beer (canadian owned). Less populated areas are still populated. National parks have traffic jams. As an outdoor guide, I've done my part as an 21st century-commercialized version of an explorer to expose wilderness, highlight adventure, and leave nothing left. But this wilderness I expose has cell phone reception, I wake up to logging trucks, planes, motor boats, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, cabellas, nature is to be shot and consumed, there's very little left. We've gotten rid of on of the strongest foundations in american identity, it happened so quickly.
We are living the effect of looking too intensely at individual character and not at our collective relationship to the environment. Masses of people, the collision of space+ creation of form, movement, energy, architecture, motion, surreal realities, visual displays of history all give us glimpses forward. Free will dissolves into collective responsibility as individual character has given way to a global reality. Wilderness has become a weather report and we continue explore and consume.

Spring is coming. I celebrated this fact with a bike ride to coney island. Hit the beach, dude, chugged some millers (drank some water), threw the pigskin (took pictures of a desolate beach), posed for them girlies tanning (smiled at old eastern European ladies). Sigh. ps coney island has a monopoly on crazy people.
Discarded watermelons and flowers were washing up all along the beach. This can be traced to the tragic+epic collision of the two shipping boats carrying...uhm watermelon and flowers. Respectively.

This is the instillation I've been hustling on for the last long time. Basically a "3d topographic" concept applied to 46 layers of laser cut, silkscreened, graphic shapes+ paintings. Over a foot thick and 12ft wide, this piece turned out simply stunning. wo.

"Located directly on a light-rail line in a commercial zone that
is slowly being revitalized, the building responds directly to the
arterial street. The building provides a transition from high traffic
street to the residential neighborhood behind. Massing and
Transparency: The upturned butterfly roof responds to the nearby
jumble of the streetscape, creating a glazed interior volume with a
direct visual link to the street. The interior volume is divided into
three daylit clinical pods by solids faced with "graffiti murals."
The Murals: The integrated murals tell the story of the neighborhood, its
residents, and the commitments the client has made to give back to the
neighborhood. They are visible from inside and outside the clinic,
from vehicles and from the light-rail." (AIA)

Long overdue, an update.
Currently Gorman and I have been working on two mural projects in Portland. The new 937 building in the pearl and a sweet mural in the south waterfront. Boom!
The 937 mural has transformed to a huge foot thick, laser cut, sculptural piece. HOT.
Other than that. I'm happy to be alive- couldn't be happier with the new president this country has decisively voted to be in office. Obama wins, America wins.
That said, it should be a time of inspiration for all. Obama is not a transformational figure based on his ability to magically fix problems we might have. He's a catalyst. By inspiring individuals as a country to change, improve, re-envision it's goals, and remind itself of it's morals. The change he's promised will simply come through us, it's our responsibility.
So be inspired.
This inspiration needs relevance, though, the future of humans depend on our ability to take care of the world we live in. America led the world in it's decree of independence. Now is America's time to lead a modernized world into a new peace. A negotiation of peace between the environment we live in and us.
My art often attempts to ask people to recognize their environment- something that has become invisible due to dominance of day to day life. Whatever. Get off the couch and do something cool.
01/01/09
Well it's been too long, right?
Lots of things have been going on... but I've been too timid to share them on my my super public website. And honestly I'm done tired of people knowing my actions&where-abouts. done tired. So any reservation is due to the harsh realities of people&privacy&information. yep.
This sounds like the new paranoia of 2009. not so. (I might be lying). On to business.
Working on a hotel in Astoria. Yes, that's where the goonies was filmed. yes, it's a cool town.
cool 3d instillation projects being worked on. almost as cool as 3d doritos. almost.
ps. doesn't this photo have a surreal fake quality to it? It looks like one of those fake model landscapes built for movie sets. and it is.

As always: GMxX is on the rise. providing some stopmotion entertainment by way of Budo Jones and myself.
This project has taken the long way around into coming into it's own existence. This spring time will be an important part of seeing this project take off in it's entirety.
The two most recent videos are based off two older tracks. 'Ring Tone' is the very first track created for this project and fittingly the visual jump off point. HOT. While it's taken a year to develop the medium and style of this project: this has been the hardest part. We were both roaming uncharted territory.
RING TONE
Sister Mary is also an older track- revisited. For a good reason too: it's a heater of a track. It took some time to match the visuals with it.

Here we are a year later to our commitment to GMxX and the collaboration is stronger/more focused than ever. You can always check back here for more videos, or Budo's site here:

A sword held high above a goat’s head,
Then the goat with no head—
Calcutta, where my father was stationed in the war.
Tiny black-and-white snapshots in a row.
By the time his ship sighted Australia
One soldier had been burned in a vat of oatmeal,
Another swept from the deck and drowned.
What happened next was like a movie.
Soldiers clambering through knee-high water to a beach
Where villagers have set up card tables,
Platters of food—what food
The camera doesn’t care about because
Soldiers are throwing themselves on the grass,
Rubbing the red dirt on their faces, their mouths—
I overheard him tell this story to my daughter
While they were coloring Easter eggs,
Painting them with wax to resist the dye,
Tracing patterns with the head of a pin.
Our capacity to be overwhelmed by the beautiful
Survives, unlike beauty,
Amid the harshest distractions.
For white and yellow against green
Dip the egg in yellow dye, dry it, mark it
With wax again, clear paraffin,
Then submerge it in blue.

Today, another Obama supporter, former Iowa Democratic Party chairman Gordon Fischer, complained that Bill Clinton was hurting the Democratic Party and leaving "a stain on his legacy much worse, much deeper, than the one on Monica's blue dress." That, of course, is a blunt reference to the former president's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky that led to impeachment hearings.
Geradine Ferarro said of Sen. Barack Obama's success: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
In another twist to the bitter battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, former vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, a member of Sen. Hillary Clinton's finance committee, vented her frustration with Sen. Barack Obama's campaign success in racially charged remarks.
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," Ferraro told a local California newspaper last week.
_____
"Senator McCain will bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign; I will bring a lifetime of experience; and Senator Obama will bring a speech that he gave in 2002," Clinton said after the event.

UPDATE:
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton netted only a 12-delegate pickup, despite winning primaries in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, according to an analysis of returns by The Associated Press.
In Tuesday's contests, Clinton won at least 185 delegates and Obama won at least 173.
Sorry to my mother, looks like I over reacted...looks like things are still ok. well as ok as they were a couple days ago.
ah hell. f*** clinton.
I respected her more before this last week and her pile of shit tactics. I'm not feeling good about the upcoming results of this nomination.
Our country is not intelligent and this is a fact that prevented kerry from winning last election. The same may go for this election. booo
But in the end. our country gets what it deserves. Our blind sighted, uneducated, easily swayed, consistently to-be-entertained ways will wreck havoc upon us. And this world. Our citizens pursue happiness with no regard to personal liberty.

green! shit is hot on the streets.
02/19/08
If this is your first time to my site, well you might think that I only take pictures with my cell phone. In actuality I often prefer my cell over my nice camera. true. Mostly because I know from the start that the picture will be kinda crappy. Therefore I could care less about the photo, I have more fun taking pictures of simple or (in this case) cheesy stuff. like sunsets!
wow what a cheesy artist I would be if I just went around taking pictures of sunsets. but since it's on my crappy camera, it makes it ok. because I'm simply documenting the time, place, and attempted feel of the moment. I'm not trying to prove myself as a sunset photographer.
Yet.
Not to worry, I have been taking real pictures also.
These are going towards my film project: GOVERNMENTMIXTAPESho!
On other non-related items, netfix has been hurting in their ability to provide dvd's which are in one piece. Though I assume the blame must come on the postal service.
Presidents day: yay! lots of people out and about today, the general feel of people on the streets was code 4 (happy) honestly when I go out and take photos some days people want to fight me. want me to get arrested. want me to fall an hurt myself. Other times people are indifferent. And on days such as these they smile even, maybe show...*gasp curiosity.
So! if the forest service can have a scale in which to rate the danger of forest fires (so west coast), or the department of homeland security (fuck all them bitches. fuckem all, don't tap my phone, trip and fall) sorry, back on subject if they can have a scale to rate the nation wide threat to evil terrorists. Then I get to have a scale rating peoples apprehension/fear/aversion to having their picture taken. 1-5
One=being arrested, beat up
Two=chased off, getting in huge arguments, lots of threats, but no action. punks.
Three=Coldness, off comments, but no direct contact... overall "did you see that dude take a picture of our daughter, total sleeze, probably find lil jane on the internet somewhere. kids these days, gross"
Four=indifferent, no matter, no bother
Five=Curiosity, conversation about process. maybe!!! even respect for a process that produces results! like you never knew.
That's my scale. and no it's never got down to code red: 1. but often gets to code orange: 2. So all you paranoid people! I'm totally going to post sleazy pictures of your ugly children on the internet! yea, I admit.
Or a brief fact you had your picture taken of you, in video format, at least ten times today. everywhere has security cameras, watching your every move. recording that shit. and some sleazy security guard is totally using that to zoom in on...you get the point. it's 2008 people. everything you do in a public space is recorded! (for better or worse)
speaking of 2008. listen to yeasayer. shit is hot.
ps. the second photo is hommie who jumped in front of my camera, people like that make my life fun. yea, hommie wins. and he pushes today into code green light: 5.! yea.
02/16/08
and here we are again. can't expect too much.
02/14/08
valentines punks. ugly people and pretty people get lonely just the same, so if your an ugly dude, find consolation in the fact that a hot girl is somewhere.....lonely and sad. probably crying. pity her and pity yourself for not being anywhere near her. life is rough.
But here's an uplifting picture! This is inscribed on voyager 1, the firthest man made object from earth. yes, currently 9.79 billion miles from the sun, shit was launched in 1975, shit is not coming back either.
Being ugly or lonely or both is really not much of a deal to our space age hommie who's flying through space faster than anything in our known universe, with his white man features but asian man eyes, fly honey, and map of the earth. Life could be good except he won't be near a star for... 40,000 years. This man is lonely. guaranteed.
so my valentines wishes will go out to space age hommie inscribed on voyager 1, the loneliest drawing of a man ever. everyone else gets no love from me. none.
02/12/08
Well it's back to cell phone photography, just because I'm that cool. don't front.
today provided a beautiful sunset: super dark end of the world clouds with incredible low and yellow light. yea.
of course it didn't hurt being right on the waterfront at the time. did hurt not having my damn camera. bitches say it's gonna rain like everyday. but it never does. thank god.
ps. I jumped the gun on that hot chip. not super hot. but still solid.
02/08/08
Yea. I went to see Obama speak today in front of 20,000 others at key arena this morning. Hmmm, I guess I'd have to say this: I'll get real excited if he gets this nomination, but there seems to be a whole lot of pessimism holding my excitement back- is it simply due to the fact that I haven't seen anything cool hit the white house since in my lifetime?
Most likely so.
I wish I was more optimistic. but I'm about damn tired of so many cool things started and soon after lost to the wind. I swear it's endemic of being an artist: a profession full of shit that never happens.
That off my chest, there were tones of hot girls at the political rally. Half of them talking about how cute obama is. The other half, not old enough to vote. Sigh.
Un related: copped that new reup gang song with the clipse. oh so hot. could reup gang actually release an album. due to the consistency of the clipse, I'd say likely. Could it be good? I do hope so. Why does a white boy like me hate hardcore drugs and ostracize rap while loving some hardcore virginia beech coke rap? I cant say.
boom!
02/07/08
New hot chip cd is hot. euro boys make dance music. white people are cool.

The April show:
"Keys Open Doors"
At Ogle Gallery, Portland.
(Broadway and Everett)
Opening: First Thursday, April 5th.
Show description:
Caleb Freese and Justin Gorman combine silkscreen, paintings, and
photography into a multi-layered instillation. Inspired by a
corrupted hard drive, this series displays how "everyday objects and
surroundings have the atmospheric ability to become something far from
their intentions, with the proper perspective".
A "seamless collaboration, this Portland duo gives depth to raw
displays of printmaking, motion and vibrant color with an elegant
simplicity". (Kit Barrington)
